Textile fragments from the salt mines of Hallstatt, Austria
The prehistoric textile fragments are found in the so-called '“heathen’s rock' (Heidengebirge). This is the hard salt stone, with traces of early man’s presence.

Thousends of pine torches, used for lighting the mine, are embedded in the rock salt.

Nowadays, the artefacts are excavated with pneumatic hammers.

Each year excavations by the archaeologists of the Natural Historiy Museum Vienna take place in the cemetery and in the prehistoric mine

The biggest fragment measures 55 by 55 centimeters and is made of six pieces. Illustrations on Iron Age vessels from Sopron show clothes made of multiple pieces, which seems common for this period.

Therefore the artist has been asked to think about her wishes on replacement of parts of the installation and long-term conservation. Besides technical research, a database has been developed with information on the production proces and original ideas that will serve as a basis for future decisions on the conservation of the installation.
